Let’s just face it – we all have an Uber spending problem. In fact, I can’t really even remember a time when Uber didn’t exist in my life. It’s one of the only smartphone apps that I use regularly, and one of the most common charges on my credit card statement. Because I had used the app so often, I never really addressed ways to minimize this spend – until I received an awesome email from Uber last month.

You can always count on Uber to take you where you need to go. And now that we’ve partnered with Capital One, Uber can take you even farther. Get a 20% statement credit for every ride you take through April 2016 when you pay with your Quicksilver card—just add it as the payment method in your Uber account.

20% cash back!? Sounds good to us.

This would make all of those lazy 3-minute rides to the bar on Saturday night 20% more worth it!

But, before we went ahead and applied for the card, we wanted to figure out how much we valued this offer. First, we wanted to see how much we had actually spent on the Uber app. To be completely honest, we were scared to see this number. (We both guessed that our spend would be around $4k each).

So we went after it – and in the middle of adding up all of our Uber statements, we realized that there must be an easier way. We looked online and found Alexei Chemenda’s post off of a recent Business Insider article, where he promised a fast and easy way to calculate how much you’ve spent with the Uber app. Take a look here.

The Results:

We each put our Uber information into the app, and we realized that this was quite a big number. Taking into account the fact that we’ve used a ton of promo codes on our rides in the past, this number should have been even bigger. We figured this would be an accurate estimate of our yearly spend, as we’ve each only had the app for about a year.

Yeah, so I guess that’s a lot of money. Total spend across the both of us was $4,764, meaning the card could potentially refunded us $952 of statement credits if this is representative of what our spend could be for 2015. No annual fee? $950 back on Uber rides? Sign us up.

More about the Quicksilver Rewards card:

  • 1.5% cash back on every purchase
  • $100 when you spend $500 in the first 3 months
  • 20% statement credit on all Uber transactions until April 2016.

TPS Recommendation: If you have excellent credit, apply for the Quicksilver Rewards card (info featured above). If you have more average credit, you should consider the QuicksilverOne Rewards card (comes with a $39 annual fee). Apply here
